FUNDAMENTAL Golf Program

The FUNdamental Golf Program

The purpose of the Fundamental Golf Program:

The basics of golf are very simple. They are also universal, existing in most every society and culture, taught in our school systems throughout the world and preached in almost every religion. The basics of golf have very little to do with the game of golf. Instead, they are the principles that provide positive growth, self reliance and the development of social skills as we strive to exist with nature and each other. Respect, honesty and knowledge are the founding principles naturally inherent in the game. They are the same principles naturally inherent in life. Here, we teach these principles, and more, to provide golfers of any age the ability to play this game in a safe, fast and courteous manner.

What is the Fundamental Golf Program?

With the emphasis on behavior of the golfers versus the swing mechanics, the FUNdamental Golf program encourages young people to develop into polite, respectful, confident, productive and contributing members of our society. This program will protect the integrity of golf and change the direction of other youth sports. The FUNdamental Golf Program will focus on how to play a game as it was originally intended, not just improvement of one's golfing skills. As negative news surrounds other sports on a regular basis, golf has separated itself by holding true to concepts such as honesty, integrity and sportsmanship. We have an opportunity to instill these traits into our young golfers and make a great impact on all others-juniors and adults alike.

Who is involved with the FUNdamental Golf Program?

The FUNdamental Golf Program is supported by a group of golf organizations that is a who's who listing in the state of Arizona. We proudly announce the following associations who support and promote FUNdamental Golf.

How does the FUNdamental Golf Program work?

At this time, the SWSPGA is forming the backbone of our program which will be the incentives offered by the golf courses throughout Arizona and those in Southern Nevada. Once the incentive offers and the program schedule is complete, we will announce the locations, dates and times that the FUNdamental Golf Program will hold on course certification seminars. At that time, participants will be issued a  card that will identify them as a FUNdamental Golf Program graduate, which entitles them to the incentives offered by participating facilities. Information outlining all the participating courses and the incentives that are offered will be available on the SWSPGA website for your review. The incentives offered will differ by course and include but are not limited to the following:

bullet
Complimentary Practice Balls
bullet
Reduced Lesson Fees
bullet
Discounted Merchandise
bullet
2 for 1 range passes
bullet
Free golf for card carrying juniors
bullet
Free twilight golf or free golf with a paying adult
bullet
And many others to be determined by each participating golf facility

The FUNdamental Golf Program certification will be valid for the calendar year beginning January 1, 2008 and expiring on December 31, 2008.  Recertification will be required on a yearly basis and the program will be updated to best fill the needs of the certification purpose.

FUNdamental Golf Outline: John Gunby, PGA

Three Ideas to make lots of friends & influence people:
bullet
Play FAST
bullet
Play SAFE
bullet
Play COURTEOUSLY
Fast means that you move quickly between shots. Hit the ball & get out of the way. Keep up with the group in front of you at all times – even if it means no practice swings or picking up your ball and moving on to the next hole.
Safe means that you don’t endanger other people with your club or ball. Know what you’re doing & watch what you’re doing. Be aware of your surroundings.
Courteous means be nice to the environment and to the people within the environment. Use the Golden Rule.

FAST PLAY
  1. Be ready to hit when it is your turn
  2. Play “Ready” golf
  3. Watch your ball all the way & line it up with a landmark. Then proceed in a straight line to that spot, if possible.
  4. Plan a shot as you’re approaching it. Know the yardage markers before you go out & play.
  5. Look at the next hole and plan the most “efficient” strategy for getting over to it.
  6. Don’t play “golf car derby”
  7. Don’t play “ball mark tag” on the putting green
  8. The first player to “Hole Out” has the Flagstick ready to put into the Cup after all players have putted out.
  9. Move on to the next tee when you’re done putting – Write down the scores on the next tee box.

SAFE PLAY
  1. Look around you and make sure the area is clear before you swing.
  2. Be in safe position so that a golf ball (even mis-hit) will not hit you.
  3. If your ball might hit someone, yell “FORE” in plenty of time.
  4. Golf Cars are just that – CARS – they are not toys & they can injure if driven recklessly.

COURTESY
  1. Make reservations to play golf and if you cannot make it or number of players change, call ahead in plenty of time. Take note of dress codes or any requirements.
  2. Arrive at least 20 minutes before your reservation & check-in.
  3. Introduce yourself (take off cap & shake hands) to your playing partners & identify your golf ball.
  4. Fix ball marks, even those of others who are not courteous.
  5. Replace Divots or repair them
  6. Rake the bunker after you have played from it.
  7. Keep golf cars away from the greens and tee (on the car paths or at least 30 yards away).
  8. Do not step in another player’s line on the green.
  9. Watch your shadow & movement while others are playing.
  10. Do not tear up the ground with practice swings.
  11. Encourage others while playing.
  12. Encourage yourself and think highly of yourself.
  13. Thank others (take off cap & shake hands) after your round for playing with you.
  14. Be aware that many more golfers are enjoying the golf course other than your group or the group directly behind you or in front of you. You might not see them, but your actions influence their enjoyment.
  15. Leave the golf course in better condition than when you arrived.

SWSPGA FUNdamental Golf Program

This program will equip the junior with the knowledge and ability to play golf in a courteous, fast and safe manner, no matter what their golf skills may be.

The Instructor(s) will cover these points below by actual demonstration and junior participation on the golf course, allowing the juniors to observe, learn, critique others and put in effect these standards on the golf course in a group setting. The Instructor(s) will escort, instruct, demonstrate and role play with the juniors starting from arrival at the golf course to checking in for play, to playing golf, to completion of play. This process should take 2-3 hours to complete with the certification and FUNdamental Golf Program Card distribution after the instruction.

This card will be valid for 1 calendar year (Jan 1 – Dec 31) and have our PGA Logo along with the AGA, AWGA, JGAA, 1st Tee, and LPGA/USGA Girls logos and their respective websites. On the back will be a strip to print the golfer’s name and a strip for the golfer to sign a statement such as:

“The above named Golfer has attended the SWSPGA FUNdamental Program for this calendar year and understands how to play golf in a Courteous, Safe and Fast manner and agrees to play in such a manner. This Golfer is extended the privileges allowed such a person and those privileges can be found on the respective website of each golf organization under the FUNdamental Golf Program icon. Any violation of the rules of etiquette or failure to play golf in a Courteous, Safe and Fast manner may result in the forfeiture of this card and these privileges.”

In the bottom edges of the card will be a box for [  ] JUNIOR or [  ] ADULT so that this card can be used for adults or juniors and all organizations are represented by it. We will certify and hold these trainings for adults as well as juniors and the different organizations will offer their incentives to those who participate.

We will capture email and physical addresses of all participants upon registration and share this with all organizations involved in this program. I have purchased and now own the domain website name = Fundamentalgolfprogram.com for our use as we see fit (collectively for all the participating organizations)

The privileges that golf facilities will extend to the junior will be such things as free range balls, discounted rounds of golf, discounted merchandise, etc. and these will be listed on our website, updated frequently. We will develop a form that will be signed by the facilities offering these incentives, similar to our SWSPGA Pass.

One introductory session will be held to demonstrate to the SWSPGA Junior Golf Committee and the other organizations participating in the program (AGA, AWGA, JGAA, 1st Tee, LPGA/USGA Girls, etc.) and how it will be presented to the juniors at each facility. Then it is the responsibility for each SWSPGA Junior Golf Committee member to contact professionals and facilities who want to participate in this program. Then the Committee member will demonstrate this program to the host facility once so that consistency is achieved. This should be relatively easy since all geographic areas of our section are represented by the Junior Golf Committee members.

This program will be conducted on the facility grounds and golf course. It is suggested that it be held in the late afternoon (#1 Tee) or early morning (#10 Tee) to maximize efficiency of the courses and not disrupt play.

3 MSR Points to PGA professionals

1 MSR Points to PGA assistants/apprentices

With the emphasis on behavior of the golfers versus the swing mechanics, this program will put the SWSPGA on the map as leaders in focusing opportunities for young people to develop into polite, respectful, confident, productive and contributing members of our society. We will be a great model for others to protect the integrity of golf and change the direction of other youth sports with our emphasis on how to play a game as it was and still is intended, not just improvement of their golfing skills. In today’s atmosphere and the negative news surrounding sports, I believe we will have sponsors, publicity, and public support galore. But more importantly, we will have a great impact on others – juniors and adults alike.
